Flush Strip ER probes monitor localised wall effects such as corrosion due to water formation in sour environments. Flush mounting places the element level with the inner wall so pigging is not affected. The element is sealed in glass instead of epoxy, which prevents FeS bridging and short circuits between body and element: recommended for severe sour service. Fixed and adjustable versions are available; probe life is 50% of the element thickness.

Electrical Resistance (ER) probes measure the increase in resistance of a corroding metal element exposed to the process: as corrosion reduces the element cross-section, resistance rises, and metal loss over time gives the corrosion rate. A reference element at the same temperature, not exposed to the medium, compensates temperature effects. ER probes work in almost any environment, including high-resistivity media where electrochemical methods fail; they respond much faster than weight loss coupons, stay installed until their life is used up, can be correlated to process parameters and can trigger alarms. Thinner elements react faster to upsets; thicker elements last longer where corrosion rates are low to medium.

The probe is mounted through a EuropCorr Hollow Plug Assembly and is used with both 2" high-pressure mechanical and hydraulic access systems; with the Retrieval Tool and Service Valve it can be changed or inspected without shutdown. Readings are taken with the MaxiCorr portable instrument through the 6-pin connector (S-type connector on request) or continuously with the MegaCorr data logger.
