In acidic and sour environments, corrosion of steel may produce atomic hydrogen that permeates the pipe wall; it can indicate general or localised corrosion due to dissolved H2S and the risk of hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) or sulphide stress cracking (SSC). The EuropCorr Hydrogen Probe detects the hydrogen gas permeating the wall by monitoring the pressure build-up in the cavity of a hydrogen cross; the pressure rise is proportional to the atomic hydrogen flux (ideal gas law).
Two types are offered: an intrusive type for projecting installation in high-pressure systems, and a non-intrusive type with a patch assembly on a threadolet, unaffected by line pressure. Both include a 1/4" NPT pressure gauge, thermometer and hydrogen bleed valve in AISI 316L.
