The orifice flow meter is a differential pressure primary element. As the fluid passes through the orifice plate, the flow contracts, the velocity increases and the static pressure falls; the resulting differential pressure across the plate is related to the flow rate by the square-root law, according to the energy conservation and continuity equations.
With no moving parts, the device is rugged and suited to high temperature and high pressure service. It is used with a differential pressure transmitter and, for gases and steam, with pressure and temperature measurement for compensation. Design and calculation follow ISO 5167, and a worn or resized plate can be replaced without changing the whole metering run.
